What will I learn in a beginner Mahjong class?

Our beginner American Mahjong lessons walk you through the game from the very beginning. You'll learn about the tiles, how to read the National Mah Jongg League card, Charleston, passing and exchanging tiles, building a hand, gameplay, and how to call Mahjong.

The goal is for you to leave understanding not just the rules, but how to actually sit down at a table and play.

I've never played Mahjong before. Can I take a class?

Yes! Our beginner Mahjong classes are designed for people with zero Mahjong experience. You don't need to know the rules or own a Mahjong set before coming to your first lesson.

Do you teach American Mahjong or Chinese Mahjong?

Mile High Mahjong teaches American Mahjong, played using the annual National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) card and rules.

What's the difference between a Mahjong lesson and Guided Play?

A Mahjong lesson is designed to teach you how to play the game, starting with the fundamentals. Guided Play is the next step. It's designed for players who understand the basics but still want help choosing hands, making decisions, learning strategy and getting comfortable playing a full game.

If you've taken a beginner Mahjong class and aren't quite ready to jump into Open Play, Guided Play is a great bridge.

How many Mahjong lessons do I need before I can play on my own?

Many people can begin playing after one comprehensive beginner lesson, but becoming comfortable takes practice. We recommend following your lesson with Guided Play or playing online so you can reinforce what you learned.

Do I need to bring a Mahjong set to class?

No. Mile High Mahjong provides Mahjong sets for all lessons and events. If you already own a set and want help learning how to use it, you're welcome to ask about bringing it.

Do I need a National Mah Jongg League card?

For American Mahjong, you need a National Mah Jongg League card. Fortunately, all of our lessons INCLUDE the NMJL card. We're one of the only groups in town that includes the card (make sure you check for that if you're "lesson shopping".

Can you teach a Mahjong lesson at my home or private event?

Yes. Private Mahjong classes can be a fun option for birthdays, neighborhood gatherings, girls' nights, corporate events and other private groups. Contact Mile High Mahjong with your location, group size and preferred date to discuss options.
